Rufus Du Sol Vinyls

Focusing on the stereotypical ways a musical genre can be identified through an album cover, this project required two type dominant designs. As the designer, we chose the artist and album to be re-created in two ways; the original musical genre, and one alternative genre.

Electronica & Dance

The original genre of this album is electronica and dance. The music within the album, Surrender, is quite smooth and mellow sounding compared to a stereotypical dance song. Because of this, the album cover shows more subtle movements rather than bigger and louder ones.

The use of the colours pink and blue help to reflect the electronica genre. This is supported with the vibrancy of the flamingo, and the altered colour of the moon. The back of the album is kept minimal, utilising the key features of the front cover, as to not distract the eye. The artist name “Rufus Du Sol” is kept small to create the hierarchy within the design.

One set of liner notes was required for this assignment using Adobe Indesign. It uses a minimal layout, utilising bolder and capitalised lettering for song titles, in contrast to the lightweight text of the lyrics. A moon was added to give the notes a sense of interest and to connect with the album cover. The light blue background also keeps on theme, but is not so bright to prevent the legibility of the text.

Rock

The alternative genre chosen for the vinyl cover was Rock. This genre is known for having a lot of energy and typically uses dark and aggressive colours. The graphic used on this cover was originally made by using a symmetrical painting style with black paint. This was then altered in Adobe Photoshop to create more vibrant colours.

For this genre I wanted to use a more hands-on approach with the painting and ripping of the paper for the effect behind the text on the front cover. This helps to represent the genre more, as it is more of a rough design technique to match the roughness of the music genre Rock.
